Old Master Drawings 1500-1890

Flavia Ormond Fine Arts Limited, of London, will be holding its sixth winter exhibition of Old Master Drawings at Adelson Galleries, Inc., 25 East 77th Street, The Mark Hotel (Third Floor), New York, NY 10021, from Tuesday, January 26 through February 12, 1999. Gallery hours are 9:30-5:30 Monday through Friday and by appointment on Saturdays. An accompanying catalogue is available upon request.

The exhibition of at least 25 drawings, ranging in date from circa 1500 to 1890, will include major drawings such as Tobit Burying the Dead by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (c. 1610-1663) from the Chatsworth Collection formed by William, 2nd Duke of Devonshire. Other interesting works include a pen and brown wash drawing by the Bolognese artist Orazio Samacchini (1532-1577), possibly a discarded idea for the Sala Reggia frescoes in the Vatican, Rome; an Elephant with Riding Mahout by the Florentine artist, Stefano della Bella (1610-1664);a red chalk drawing of a draped female figure, by the rare Emilian court artist, Bartolomeo Schedoni (1578-1615) for his important ceiling decoration of The Harmonies in The Town Hall, Modena, and Pastoral Landscape by the famous French landscape painter, Claude Lorrain, who spent most of his working life in Rome. Among the 18th century drawings, there is an elegant drawing depicting A Roman Villa by the French artist, Jacques-Philippe-Joseph de Saint-Quentin (1758- ?) and another of figures, seen di sotto su, by the Venetian painter, Domenico Tiepolo (1724-1804). The 19th century group contains a full-length portrait, Standing Peasant, dated 1823, by the Roman artist Bartolomeo Pinelli, and a pencil sketch of a Hand Holding a Goblet, dated 1890 by the German artist Adolph von Menzel.
